The attorney’s smile thinned. “You dislike your brother, don’t you?” he asked.
I paused. That was the question my family had been waiting for. Not whether Grant had done it. Not whether the evidence was real. Whether I could be made to seem small enough that my work became small too.
“No,” I said. “I dislike crimes committed by people who believe family loyalty should protect them from consequences.”
The courtroom changed after that. I felt it before I saw it. The prosecutor stopped taking notes and looked up. The judge leaned back. Grant’s shoulders lowered by a fraction, as if the air had grown too heavy for him to hold.
When the attorney sat down, he did it slowly.
Judge Harrison reviewed the affidavit in silence. Then he lifted his head.
“Motion to suppress is denied,” he said. “The warrant was properly supported. The defense has failed to show bias sufficient to undermine probable cause. Given the nature of the charges and the flight-risk evidence presented, bail is also denied.”
The gavel struck.
